It started with a hot spring in Tanzania.
In May 2022, Sofia Calvin and her mother traveled to Tanzania for the first time. On the way to a national park, they stopped at a local hot spring. A young man named Brighton approached and offered to be their guide.
He led them through the water, pointing out birds, wildlife and nature with remarkable knowledge and quiet passion. His English was entirely self-taught — picked up from movies and music. He had never left Tanzania.
Sofia asked him what he wanted to do with his life. He said he wanted to work in tourism — to be a guide, and one day have his own safari business.
Sofia connected Brighton with her Tanzania tour operator, who helped enroll him in a tourism and hospitality school. Two stipulations: live on campus to focus on his studies, and speak with Sofia weekly so she could track his progress.
Brighton is now on a clear career path in tourism in his home country. The Bucket Foundation exists to do for hundreds more young Tanzanians what Sofia did for Brighton.
